A wise man once said,"We the big three like we started a league, but right now I feel like Muhammad Ali"! That man is the FORMER member of Hip Hop's big three, J. Cole. Alright, I'm joking about Cole not being apart of the big three any longer, but after apologizing to Kendrick Lamar after releasing "7 Minute Drill" - I must admit that it's looking a little shaky for Mr. Cole! There's absolutely no reason that J. Cole should be apologizing to Kendrick, when Kendrick was the person who shot first. The apology would be perceived differently if Cole shot at Kendrick first, but in this case J. Cole was retaliating by metaphorically swinging back on Kendrick after getting swung on by Kendrick first. Growing up, our mommas always told us that if someone hit you first, you hit them back. Again, Kendrick threw shots at J. Cole first, not the other way around. Fans around the world were anticipating this Hip-Hop back and forth being that this situation wasn't actual "beef", it was merely "sparring" between what many would consider the two greatest lyricists in the game today.
About ten years ago,J. Cole had this song back in the day titled 'Let Nas Down', it was a song about Cole feeling like he let Nas down due to certain decisions he felt he made or shouldn't have made. In this scenario, I must admit that there's a great chance that Cole has 'Let Nas Down' once again (insert Michael Jordan crying emojis). What happened to the "Ether" days, the "Hit Em Up' days, the "Takeover" days, etc.? C'mon Cole, you can't let the game down like this! Now to be fair, J. Cole's reason for apologizing and feeling that this back and forth has weighed on his mental causing him to lose sleep, shouldn't be taken lightly as mental health is one of the most important things on this planet. Then again, saying the world is disappointed is an understatement. Over the last three years, J. Cole has consistently threw shots at rappers, "begging" them to try him and test his pen. Now that a rapper has done exactly what he's been asking, he...apologizes? This is unacceptable!
Kendrick Lamar or 'Kung-Fu Kenny' has been warning the game for over a decade to not poke the bear. He did it ten years ago back in 2014 when he dropped 'Control' and he's doing it now. Kendrick has been warning Hip-Hop to stay away or get lyrically smoked. A few rappers along the way have tried to respond over the years, but no response garnered as much attention as J. Cole's response did. You want to know what's scary and crazy at the same time? In J. Cole's diss, he mentioned how Kendrick indeed has some classic albums under his belt, in which he indirectly expressed that Kendrick's "To Pimp A Butterfly" album was trash. The crazy part is that the album that Cole thought was trash, was actually the album that predicted his demise! Before you ask how so, look at these lyrics that Kendrick rapped on the song "Mortal Man" from TPAB. Kung-Fu Kenny said "I remember you was conflicted, misusing your influence. Sometimes I did the same, abusing my power full of resentment. Resentment that turned into a deep depression, found myself screaming in the hotel room. I didn't wanna self destruct..." It's a wrap, Kendrick Lamar 3-0 body bag! There's no way that anyone can ever compare J. Cole to Kendrick anymore after this, this moment will go down in Hip-Hop history. Now don't get me wrong, J. Cole is still elite and deserves all the achievements he's earned over his career, he just can't ever call himself the greatest or say he's better than Kendrick Lamar because when he was challenged for the throne...he apologized. All I know, is that Kendrick is looking like Deebo on the block right now! Drake better have a nuclear bomb for Kendrick when he drops because if he doesn't it may get dark out here ladies and gentleman. Was J. Cole correct for apologizing? Will Drake drop a nuclear bomb? Will Kendrick remain supreme? Let me know what you think below!
