“Back like I never left!” were the words that Los Angeles Lakers star D’Angelo Russell, yes I said star, shouted towards the crowd after going crazy in the 3rd quarter during his first game back at Staples Center (now known as Crypto.com Center) in six years. Listen Lakers front office, sign D’Angelo Russell to an extension now! He has been balling uncontrollably since returning to the Lakers. The star point guard we have been waiting for is finally here now, there’s no need to search any longer. Has anyone ever heard of the phrase, “You never know what you got, until it’s gone”? The re-acquisition of D-Lo is a perfect representation of this quote in my opinion. His demeanor and leadership qualities have vastly improved from his first stint on the Lakers and we can tell during his post-game interviews. It has only been a handful of games, but he has already shown he can lead and has already garnered the respect of the fan base and his peers. D’Angelo can do it all! He plays at a very smooth pace, he can shoot, dribble, and playmake with the best of them. Most importantly, he has shown that he is a good fit alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis. I’m not sure if this is a crazy statement or not, but I would rather have the ball in Russell’s hands than LeBron’s hands in the half court. This is extremely important, especially when the playoffs arrive as the pace is predominantly slower than the regular season. Let D-Lo run the show and allow LeBron to play off-ball!
The only question is, will LeBron actually allow D-Lo to run the show? I know before the trade went through, we all wanted the Lakers to acquire Kyrie Irving. Listen, Kyrie is my favorite player, but I personally feel that we should keep D-Lo and the squad we have now. Aside from D'Angelo, the acquisition of Jared Vanderbilt, Rui Hachimura, Mo Bamba, and Malik Beasley has worked wonders for the organization thus far. My grandma always said, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”! D’Angelo Russell is a star and the front office needs to sign him to an extension now! The Lakers are in good hands with D-Lo at the helm and we are looking scary since the trade deadline. I believe the Lakers can win the championship this year, if the Lakers play to their full potential. We shall find out as time goes on!
